Mission-Minded Monday - Apartment Life

For those of you who know Stephen and me well, you know that our heartbeat is seeing people's lives changed because of the message of Christ. We believe the Great Commission is not a calling, it's a commandment. While God may not be calling you to pack up and move to Africa (or maybe He is), He is calling you to do SOMETHING!

This may seem a little radical, but I don't think it really matters all that much what you do. Just get off the couch and find a need and meet it! Once you're out there serving, God may point you more specifically to the ministry He's called you to. But believe me, it's a lot easier to hear God while you're serving than it is while you're watching SpongeBob.

So with that in mind, we're going to start Mission-Minded Mondays. Each Monday, we'll highlight a ministry or organization that provides opportunities for you to work out your faith in a tangible way. It is our prayer that this will challenge you to make a difference in this world of people who desperately need Jesus.

For our first Mission-Minded Monday, we decided to start with something that is near and dear to our hearts: Apartment Life. Many of you know that Stephen and I serve as a CARES Team at an apartment complex in Dunwoody, GA through the Apartment Life ministry. I have never seen a more practical way to live out your faith in everyday life.

As a CARES Team, Stephen and I plan events for our complex to build community and we also provide care to residents in times of need. Our whole goal is to build relationships with our neighbors, which opens up doors for us to share Christ's love.

Surprisingly, apartment residents are a huge unreached segment of our society. In most major cities in the US, 50% or more of the population lives in apartments. It is estimated that 95% of people residing in apartments are unchurched, compared to only 60% of homeowners.

Stephen and I feel very strongly about our call to reach the people in our community. Apartment Life gives us the training and support to be able to effectively do that. Plus, we get a 2 bedroom apartment in exchange for the work that we do here, which is a nice bonus! If you want to get more information about the ministry, check out www.caresteam.org or send me an email at brandy@theverners.org.

Stayed tuned next Monday for more ideas about how you can practically share your love for Christ with the world. Or, feel free to send us your ideas and we'll be happy to post them! Have fun making a difference!
